Microcredit, Small Business, & Working at Home

  • ACCION International. (English, Spanish, French.) A nonprofit started in 1961 by student volunteers in the favelas (slums) of Caracas, Venezuela, ACCION has offered small but critical loans (microcredit) and other vital services to millions of supposedly "unbankable" low-income small business owners throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, the United States, Africa, and India.

  • The Abilities Fund. Nationwide (US) resource for disabled people, including disabled women, in or interested in self-employment. You may also wish to check out this list of Vocational Rehabilitation State Offices and Directory of Independent Living Centers and Statewide Independent Living Councils to see what employment/self-employment aid is available to you at the state or local level.

  • FTC (Federal Trade Commission [US]) Facts for Consumers: Work-At-Home Schemes. (English, Spanish.) It's possible to create and run your own business from your home. Sometimes it's even possible to do good, legitimate work for another employer in your home. But it's important to learn how to recognize and avoid the scams.

  • US Small Business Administration. (English, Spanish.) Has tools for planning the start and operation of a small business; offers grant, loans, and other help.

  • Living Wage Resource Center [US]. From ACORN, the national nonprofit campaign for the rights of low-income and poor people.

  • Economic Policy Institute [US] Issue Guide: Living Wage.

  • MomsRising. Grassroots coalition calling for the USA to really value motherhood and family, through public commitment to maternity/paternity leave, open/flexible work arrangements, afterschool care, children's health care, child care, & gender-equal, living wages. The Nonviolent Choice Directory has applied to be an aligned organization.

  • Clearinghouse on International Developments in Child, Youth and Family Policies at Columbia University. Lucidly presents credible data to compare "industrialized" nations in these areas. Very interesting to check this information against The Incidence of Abortion Worldwide (has chart of abortion rates by country) and Abortion Policies: A Global Review (has country-by-country profiles). Herein may be, for example, some clues why the US has four times the abortion rate of the Netherlands!
